Book: The Sword and the Mask : Violence in Jacobean Tragedy

Introduction

The Jacobeans found in the theme of violence a powerful means of expression, which was accessible to a hugely credulous audience which was little touched by subtle psychological analyses and incapable of going beyond a lively natural sensitivity. They were not original in unleashing on the stage all those gory spectacles that we, naïvely, reproach them for today. War, suicide, duelling, tragic death and torture were all known before and after the reign of James I. At that time, poets were inspired by a Romanticism before it really existed, and to the idea of the liberated word, they added a particular technique which, as we shall see, recalls baroque tendencies flourishing elsewhere in Europe at the time, and especially in Italy

In The Tragedy of Tiberius, the single combat is fought between Germanicus and the rebel chief, Vanones, thus recalling the fight between Hector and Ajax in Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida in so far as its purpose is to avoid further bloodshed, rather than the possession of a woman, as in Sophonisba. In the Tragedy of Tiberius, the fight is not waged to show off the bravery of the characters, but has the higher purpose of emphasizing the distant consequences of certain acts committed by Tiberius, the tyrannical usurper of Rome. In trying to get rid of the legitimate heir - Germanicus - Tiberius in fact only consolidates the prestige and renown of this general, whose troops worship with almost religious fervour. The single combat, therefore, becomes the symbol of homage paid. It shows off Germanicus to his men, underlines his nobility of soul both during and after the duel, and legitimizes his claims to the throne
